The Direction générale d’Eeyou Istchee Baie-James of the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable celebrates its second anniversary!
On October 3, 2022, the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable officially announced the creation of a new regional office on the Eeyou Istchee James Bay territory. Since then, the Direction générale d’Eeyou Istchee Baie-James (DGEIBJ) has been ensuring the maintenance of 1,540 kilometres of roads and 145 structures.
Many people in the region felt drawn to the mandate given to this new regional office, and the team soon grew from 3 to 29 employees in just 18 months. Thanks to the work of these key individuals, the Ministère has successfully fulfilled an essential element of its mission: develop northern expertise in transportation.
Since 2022, numerous milestones have been achieved on the Eeyou Istchee James Bay territory, including:
- major repairs to the heritage bridge over Rivière Waswanipi;
- the upgrading of rectangular rapid flashing beacons in the municipalities of Chapais and Chibougamau;
- the repair of the municipal bridge in the Lac aux Dorés area and structures along Route 19900, between Lebel-sur-Quévillon and Matagami;
- the repair of a structure located near Lac Renault;
- the replacement of two structures along Route du Nord;
- the paving of several sections of Route 113 and Route 167;
- making isolated roads safer by improving signage on Cree community access roads and on Route 19900;
- the installation of three traffic cameras: two on Route 113 and one on Route 167 North;
- and much more!
The DGEIBJ’s priority is to listen to the needs of local residents. Annual meetings are held with the coastal and inland Cree communities to discuss their challenges and concerns regarding road infrastructure projects. In 2023, DGEIBJ teams travelled around the region to meet with Indigenous organizations and communities in Nord-du-Québec. These meetings have enabled us to expand our knowledge of the area and to establish partnerships.
This new regional office was created in response to needs expressed by the population over several years and sought to improve the effectiveness of government interventions in the North. Two years later, we can say “Mission accomplished!”
