Looking Back at the Waskaganish Business Conference: Inspiration, Mentorship, and Community Engagement

Braving the storm to attend the Waskaganish Business Conference was absolutely worth it! Organized by the Economic Development Officer of the Waskaganish Eeyou Nation, Melvin Wesley, the event gave us the opportunity to present the Niimuudaan mentoring program, and was also a valuable opportunity to connect and exchange ideas on entrepreneurship and community economic development.
The warm welcome from Chief Greta Cheechoo and the community, along with a delicious wild goose feast prepared by local entrepreneur Stephanie Salt, made this experience even more memorable.
One of the highlights of the conference was the presence of Kendal Netmaker, an award-winning entrepreneur, author, and inspiring keynote speaker. He delivered a captivating workshop on "The Business Fundamentals of Starting and Growing a Business," offering practical advice on launching and expanding a business. Beyond his teachings, Kendal is a valued mentor to many Indigenous entrepreneurs. Everywhere he goes, he inspires those who are meant to hear his message.
Having role models like Kendal Netmaker is essential for aspiring entrepreneurs. His journey proves that with determination, support, and the right guidance, anything is possible. This is why we were honored to be invited to this event, a great opportunity to present the Niimuudaan program, which aims to support and equip the next generation of Cree entrepreneurs.
We are always looking for mentees who wish to benefit from this program and learn from exceptional mentors. If you're interested in learning more, feel free to reach out!
Finally, we took the opportunity to visit and support local businesses such as Jacob’s Restaurant, Kanio-Kashee Lodge, Eeyou Istchee Lifestyle, Smokey Hill Grocery Store, and Northern Store. Supporting local businesses is crucial for entrepreneurial growth within the community. Every effort contributes to building a strong and sustainable local economy!
Thank you, Waskaganish, for this invitation and your generous hospitality. Together, let’s continue to support Indigenous entrepreneurship!
