Change and Continuity: A Look Back at the Summer Elections in Cree and Anicinabek Communities
Summer 2025 brought several key elections across Cree and Anicinabek communities. These changes at the local and regional levels reflect the vitality of democratic engagement throughout Eeyou Istchee and beyond.
Cree Nation – A Renewed Leadership
At the regional level, the Cree Nation elected a new Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief:
- Grand Chief / Chairperson: Paul John Murdoch
- Deputy Grand Chief / Vice-Chairperson: Linden Spencer
Both leaders will be responsible for guiding the Nation through important political, economic, and cultural directions in the years ahead.
Cree Nation Youth Council – A New Generation of Leadership
- Youth Grand Chief: Jade Mukash
- Deputy Youth Grand Chief: Darius Neacappo Pelchat
These young leaders are called upon to represent the voice of Cree youth and actively contribute to major social, cultural, and economic issues in the years to come.
Elections in Cree Communities
Several Cree communities also held local elections. Here are the confirmed results:
Chisasibi
- Chief: Daisy House Lameboy (re-elected)
- Deputy Chief: Thomas Shem
Wemindji
- The Chief election will continue on September 19.
- Deputy Chief: Charlotte Ottereyes-Ratt
Waswanipi
- Deputy Chief: Sammy Salt-Blacksmith
Anicinabek Nation – Local Leadership Updates
From the Anicinabek side, here are some confirmed results:
Kitcisakik
- Chief: Edouard Brazeau
- Deputy Chief: Adrienne Anicinapeo
Long Point First Nation (Winneway)
- Chief: Steeve Mathias
Kebaowek
- Chief: Lance Haymond (re-elected)
