A new chapter begins for Kitcisakik

January 17, 2026 marks a historic milestone for the community of Kitcisakik, as families officially connected to electricity for the first time. The Secretariat to the Cree Nation Abitibi-Témiscamingue Economic Alliance (SCNATEA) was honoured to be present for this emotional and transformative moment.

A powerful moment rooted in resilience

Located near the Dozois Reservoir, Kitcisakik is an Anicinabe community that, until now, lived entirely off-grid. Families relied on gas generators, expensive and noisy, hauling fuel daily, cutting and storing firewood, and waking up at night to keep the fire going. This reality, while incredibly demanding, reflected the strength and adaptability of the community.

A brighter future starts now

Thanks to the electrification project led by Hydro-Québec and the community, with the support of multiple partners, Kitcisakik homes now benefit from:
  • improved daily comfort and safety
  • reliable refrigeration for food and medicine
  • quieter, healthier living spaces
  • and new opportunities for growth, education, and entrepreneurship
This new infrastructure opens the door to a future that reflects the community’s vision and values.

SCNATEA proud to stand alongside Kitcisakik

As an organization committed to building lasting relationships between peoples and regions, SCNATEA was proud to attend this inauguration and walk beside community members, leaders, and partners.
We salute the determination of Kitcisakik’s people, especially the elected leaders and elders, who have long envisioned this day.
May this new light guide and support you in all your future endeavours.
